Indoor Air Quality Testing

BACS offers a service to verify the quality of your computer room or data centre’s environment. We measure the dust in the air of your computer facility, which gives an indication of the effectiveness of your technical cleaning regime. A comprehensive report is provided after the measurement, giving a summary of recommendations, an analysis of the measurements and the actual results. To further enhance the report, BACS offers a profiling option that graphically shows and analyses where the highest concentrations of dust were found in the environment.

Why do I need to measure my data centre’s air quality?

Many clients require that minimum standards must be met for their computers’ physical environment, to minimise risk of failure. Additionally, many providers of computing facilities offer compliance to standards as a value-add to their clients. The measurement of air quality is one of the defining qualities of just how clean your computer facilities really are.

How can I use an Air Quality Report?

An Air Quality Report is a useful selling tool. It provides absolute evidence to your company, prospective and current clients, or other external bodies, on the state of compliance to air quality standards. It can show that your computing facility is being maintained in the correct manner, and that it meets international and Australian Standards for computer accommodation. The report measures the results against AS-2834 – 1995 or AS/NZ ISO 14644.1:2002 standards. The Reporting service is not a certification service to either of these Standards, but does verify the air quality meets, does not meet, or exceeds these standards.

Additionally, rises in dust concentration over time can be an early indicator of air conditioner problems, or lapses in facility maintenance or management. Used on a regular basis, Air Quality Reporting can be incorporated into a maintenance regime to provide proactive computer facility maintenance.

How is Air Quality measured?

Dust particles of 6 discreet sizes, ranging from 0.5 to 25 microns (1 micron = 1 millionth of a metre) are counted as air is drawn through a tube for 1 minute in a Particle Counter device. The concentrations for each size of the particles in the environment are calculated from these measurements. Sample points are taken in accordance to AS/NZ ISO 14644 methodology.

What does the report contain?

The report contains a Summary with Recommendations, a Measurement Methodology explanation, and a Detailed Analysis report with relevant excerpts of the raw data. A full copy of the raw data and map of the sampling points are also provided. If requested, the optional graphical Concentration Profile and analysis is provided.

The Analysis shows points, as applicable, where particle concentrations were over specification and provide commentary on these points of interest.
